It’s the year 2040, and sixteen-year-old Dez Harkly is one of the last of her kind—part of a nearly extinct race of shape-shifters descended from guardians to the Egyptian pharaohs. Her home and her secret are threatened when the Council lowers the barrier, allowing the enemy race to enter the Shythe haven.
As the Narcolym airships approach, Dez and her friends rebel against their Council and secretly train for battle. Not only is Dez wary of war and her growing affection for her best friend Jace, but she fears the change her birthday will bring. When Dez’s newfound power rockets out of control, it’s a Narcolym who could change her fate... if she can trust him.
Dez’s guarded world crumbles when she discovers why the Narcos have really come to Haven Falls, and she's forced to choose between the race who raised her and the enemy she's feared her whole life.

I am a huge advocate for science fiction novels and also a huge fan of steam punk! They both rock my world. Action, romance, and an unique world, Destiny's Fire had a nice hook but the romance did falter with me only because of my pet peeve. I just want to say right now that I did like the world-building and the uniqueness of Dez and her "secret", because when I go into the love triangle bit it might seem like I didn't like the book, because that wasn't the case! I'm just very passionate about love triangles and the YA market.

Let me start on a lighter foot and one of my favorite things about this novel. The world-building. It was great, captivation. Though I do admit it took me a bit to really get into the story, but once I did I was instantly hooked (minus the love triangle). Trisha Wolfe had a wonderful start to a series going on and her writing does take you by storm while reading and even melts you in some scenes. levibikes, shapeshifters, steampunk, future, all these things had hooked me hard. Tempting stuff, I tell you!

Love Triangles. Can't stand love triangles. There are very rare instances that I enjoy reading them, but most of the time in YA history love triangles happen when the female protagonist crosses paths with two different boys:
  1. The best friend. Loyal and a total sweet heart. Welcome Jace, ladies and gentleman. He was an adorable  He's protective and always there for her and likes to rile Dez up a bit, because that's his character. But as far as romance goes, I am an advocate for the best friend = lover approach because it's becoming extinct more and more and being replaced for guy number two that I'll be getting to in a second. And Jace's loved Dez for years, but like most main girl protagonists, she's oblivious. Aaaaaaand end scene.
  2. The mysterious and douchbaggary boy from down the lane is up for spot number two in this triangular love shape. Reese, I love the name, is our welcoming douche bag of the novel. He's a Narcolym and really likes to push Dez's buttons but like the usual addition boy that rivals the best buddy boy does. He's sarcastic and pompous. He was a complete jerk in the beginning and ends up being more sincere towards her, per usual.

I'm all for some snark and herp-derping all around YA characters. I'm also for steamy kissy scenes that make me melt, I love those! But love triangles aren't  my neck of the woods. Romance, I'm cool with, but I just like to see something different, a more original approach with the two opposing characters for that number one spot for Dez's or any main protagonist's love. That's all I'm asking for in this market. Because reading the same old song and dance with different characters just get's redundant. If you love to ship, here is you're chance because this book is a great place to ship one boy over the other. They both have their redeeming qualities.

Final Summation: Sci-fi fans, steampunk fans, this is your calling card. Loves of the love triangles, here is your call. Basically anyone who is up for a unique and attention grabbing read, Destiny's Fire should be in your hand. I anticipate the second book, I literally need the second book!
